Blending into the prosperous surroundings of the Gross Point neighborhood, City Kitchen’s contemporary cooking satisfies both refined and inexperienced palates alike. The attractive open kitchen assembles dishes like a smoked salmon open-faced sandwich over pumpernickel with boursin, capers, red onions and chopped eggs. If that doesn’t work, then perhaps the halibut with garlic spinach, beet coulis, whipped potatoes, pecan-crusted pickerel topped with dried apples and cherry butter will do. Despite the complexity of the dishes the restaurant is causal as demonstrated by the fine staff and relaxing atmosphere that make City Kitchen an excellent restaurant.

D’Amatos

D’ Amatos is not just another Italian restaurant trying to convince you how great their veal Parmesan is. In fact, you won’t even find veal Parmesan on their menu. However, you will find dishes like veal saltimbocca (the veal is cut by restaurant’s in-house butcher) and vegetable Napoleon for those who aren’t too keen on meat. After dinner, the spirits start to lift with jazz and people watching at Goodnight Gracie, the restaurant’s thriving martini bar. While the kitchen shuts down eventually, the full bar stays open until 2am for people to enjoy cocktails and mingling.

Fiddleheads

Named for the indigenous trees that can be found in the woods surrounding the restaurant, Fiddleheads aims to create the same beautiful and natural aura with their cuisine. The seasonal menu keeps dishes updated by always using the freshest ingredients at hand. Notable summer selections include pan-seared scallops with a chilled soba noodle salad and papaya green curry and another summer favorite is the sautéed Australian Barramundi with artichoke tapenade and celery root mash. Fiddlehead serves an inventive brunch on Sundays as well from 10am to 3pm and is open weekdays for lunch from 11:30 to 3pm and re-opens for dinner service at 5pm.

For a something different, check out Fishbone’s Rhythm Kitchen for a little jazz along with Creole, American or Japanese cuisine. With two full bars, multi-level seating and an open kitchen, Fishbone’s is prepared to entertain folks wile they enjoy a fantastic meal at the Detroit restaurant. There is also a full bar with plenty of seating to enjoy a cocktail and appetizers. Since it opened, Forte has received praise for being one of the best looking restaurants with the best looking crowd in Michigan. Must-try specialties include lobster “ tots” and Lake Superior Whitefish. Save room for enticing desserts like vanilla crème brulee or chocolate banana cake. La Dolce Vita

When Detroit locals are looking for a great lamb shank they know they can find a delicious one on the cozy balcony of Laikon Cafe. As a standout restaurant on a street filled with similar fare, Laikon’s delicious flaming cheese (Greek cheese balls topped with brandy and then lit with a flame) and infamous Greek salads are worth a taste. The central bar under the balcony stairway is a cushy place to have a drink and mellow out at this Greek restaurant.

The fast food revolution has plagued the United States for far too long so Moo Moo’s works to fill people up with grains, fruits and vegetables to rid the body of fatty toxins. Even skeptics have to admit the Sunrise Burrito with tofu scramble, yellow and green zucchini, roasted red peppers, soy cheddar and Moo’s salsa sounds like an ideal way to start the day. Lunch is equally tantalizing with flavorful sandwiches like the grilled asparagus sandwich served with fresh mozzarella, roasted pistachios, sliced roma tomatoes, avocado and honey mustard dressing. Moo Moo’s Organic Bistro will leave diners full and feeling healthy which a burger from the fast food joint can’t do.

New Parthenon

To really accentuate the authenticity of Greek Town in Detroit, New Parthenon serves up classic Greek dishes that would satisfy the appetite of Zeus. The restaurant dishes up home-style Greek cooking from 11am until 3am daily, which makes it a popular spot for the late night post-bar crowd. The Greek statues and art deco décor add character to the restaurant and plates of octopus, pastitso baked macaroni, spinach pie or New Parthenon’s special baked eggplant fill the stomach.

Vinotecca
